Doubly good way to get into circulation

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the benefits that cross-border, joint supervision of doctoral candidates can offer. From the students point of view, having two supervisors offers the benefits of more attention, advice from different points of view, the chance to spend time in two countries and the prestige of having two universities' names validating the doctorate. From a supervisors' point of view the benefits can be more mixed, as taking on a new research student could add considerably to the teaching burden without automatically guaranteeing that the time and effort invested will be acknowledged.

Fury over PhD for child-sex research

Article Abstract:

Glasgow University's decision to award Richard Yuill a doctorate for his thesis "Male Age-Discrepant Intergenerational Sexualities and Relationships", which describes "positive" experiences of sex between adults and children, has been criticised. Child-protection practitioners and experts in the field of child abuse argue that Yuill's work will simply play into the hands of child abusers who often claim that their victims are willing participants.

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the standards of PhDs in the United Kingdom and how they compare to PhDs in other European countries. It is argued that while the standards of British doctorates may not meet European standards, increasing the level of bureaucracy involved in the process will not improve standards.
