Drowning by numbers

Article Abstract:

The UK is predicted to see a surge in demand for higher degrees, with postgraduates expected to make up between one quarter and one third of all students at most universities by the middle of the next decade. Such growth has great implications for the higher education sector and indeed could change the face of the sector. The rise in postgraduates will inevitably lead to them being treated better, with better postgraduate academic and social facilities and better resources. Study will also be more flexible, with more distance learning and postgraduate study at work.

The insidious erosion of ethics

Article Abstract:

Cheating takes many forms in graduate research work. Research students may be tempted to make changes to anomalous data, for example, or they may invent evidence to support a certain conclusion or ignore analytical techniques which produce results which they do not wish to use. Similarly, research supervisors can be guilty of cheating, perhaps by forcing students to become involved in unappealing research topics or methods. Where an ethical error is made, it is often the fault of the supervisor, rather than that of the graduate student.

Graduate wastage reaches crisis point

Article Abstract:

ISTAT, the Italian statistics organisation, reports that only 43% of graduates in Italy obtain full-time employment following the completion of their course. Many students do not complete their degrees because of the poor job prospects throughout the country. Graduate posts are few in number and any remaining jobs in the country are often inappropriate.
