Educating ostriches

Article Abstract:

William Dutton, the director of the Oxford Internet Institute, Alison Wolf, professor of management at King's College, London, and Sa'ad Medhat, director, education, policy and innovation at the Engineering and Technology Board, give their reactions to the statement in the Higher Education Funding Council for England's "Towards a Unified e-learning Strategy" consultation document that e-learning strategy must be driven by the needs of students and not by technology. Dutton hopes that the document will create an opportunity for academics to avoid becoming e-ostriches, Wolf believes the document is depressing and patronising while Medhat argues that it is not depressing and that it invites academics to revitalise an otherwise stagnating environment.

Ride the high-tech wave and surf into the future

Article Abstract:

The secretary of state for education and skills in the United Kingdom urges universities to innovate and embrace e-learning in order to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century and discusses the potential that e-learning offers in the light of the publication of the "Towards a Unified E-learning Strategy" consultation document. He contends that there is pressure on universities from all directions to embrace e-learning, but that whilst there are a few pockets of excellence as far as e-learning is concerned, few universities and colleges are yet using the full potential of e-learning.
