End to AUT pay dispute in sight

Article Abstract:

The Association of University Teachers (AUT) appears to be poised to call off industrial action over pay following an announcement by the Trades Union Congress that agreement over "positive proposals" had been reached by the union and employers in an attempt to bring the conflict to an end. It is believed that significant progress has been made in resolving the AUT's two key concerns over the new pay agreement, namely that the new pay structure could lower the career earning of AUT members, and that the AUT's academic-related staff could be separated, pay-wise, from their academic colleagues.

Pay drive faces local hurdles

Article Abstract:

Three academic trade unions in the United Kingdom - the Association of University Teachers, Natfhe and the Educational Institute of Scotland - which together represent over 140,000 staff, have come together to fight for a 28% pay increase over three years. The unions expect that the biggest fight over the deal will come from university vice-chancellors who, bolstered by a government that is determined to open higher education up to the free market, are seeking to ignore national pay deals and set their own pay levels.
