'Entry grades are worse, so we've got to get better'

Article Abstract:

Issues highlighted by a nationwide survey of academics in the United Kingdom conducted by the Times Higher Education Supplement and ICM Research are examined. The survey reveals that academics are having to change their teaching methods in order to effectively deal with a broader range of students; that they fear that easier university entry standards are leading to an increase in dropout rates; that the majority, 58%, believe that easier university entry is encouraging dumbing down of courses; and that they are struggling under an increase in red tape.

Hunt for the killer app

Article Abstract:

From enabling access to official documents and past papers to offering room-booking services, some portals have developed the services required to get users to return and log on again and again. In autumn 2003, a number of universities in the UK launched staff and student portals and these are examined in an effort to identify what makes a "killer app" or application, that is an application that can capture the imagination and transform daily life, when it comes to university portals.

I do like to learn beside the sea

Article Abstract:

Essex University teamed with the town of Southend in 1999 to create a further education campus, South East Essex College. It now has 12,000 students in an area that had a poor record of participation in higher education. Every aspect of the college, from its intranet to its architecture to its use of wireless laptops for each teacher, fosters a non-hierarchical culture that encourages both teamwork between students and faculty, and individual development.
