Rescuing history from the scholars

Article Abstract:

Only a few long-stay hospitals for the learning disabled are still open in the UK. The Open University has created an oral archive of interviews with former residents of these hospitals, in an effort to record a chapter of social history in the UK that allowed these hospitals to exist. By combining memories with documentary sources, former residents and their relatives have found important information, and the country has gained a rich record that enhances its academic historical view.

Squeaky wheels get the grease

Article Abstract:

Social work research units at universities in the United Kingdom need to make their voices heard if they are to continue to receive adequate financing in an environment when funding is getting increasingly tight. It is contended that groups, such as the Economic and Social Research Council, which award funding do not always recognise the work done by social work units and therefore do not award them the funding they deserve.

Where to find identity if you live in shadows?

Article Abstract:

An analysis of research into private fostering in the United Kingdom, the laws regulating fostering and the impact that being fostered can have on a child.
