European R&D draining to US

Article Abstract:

Guy Haug, principal administrator to the European Commission's directorate of education, has told delegates attending the Europaeum conference on university partnerships that European firms are increasingly spending their research and development budgets in the United States, and that this could have dire consequences for the European economy and for European universities. Haug was revealing the contents of a paper called "The European Challenge", which had been presented to the European Council earlier in 2003 from the influential European Round Table of Industrialists. The paper calls for Europe to invest in centres of excellence and increase the supply and status of scientists in order to combat the effects of underfunded universities, undermotivated educational systems and a sparsity of centres of excellence.

Report shows poor not scared of loans

Article Abstract:

A survey of the use of student loans in the United Kingdom suggests that students from poorer backgrounds are as likely to use such loans as their richer counterparts, though women tend to use these loans less than men. Students on vocatioal courses were more likely to use loans according to the survey, carried out by Geraint Johnes from Lancaster University Management School. Students also appear to be pushed in the direction of vocational studies, as loans begin to replace maintenance grants, according to Johnes.
