Exporting ethics in place of arms

Article Abstract:

Ordinary people can play a part in Foreign Secretary Robin Cook's drive to make Britain a force for good in the world by supporting organisations committed to human rights, or helping campaigners against nuclear weapons or the arms trade, for example. Critics claim that Cook's pursuit of a foreign policy with an ethical dimension is not in the national interest because the UK risks losing influence with important trading partners. However a regime with an appalling human rights record is unlikely to have a secure future and contracts lost do not necessarily lead to massive redundancies.

A calling to arms

Article Abstract:

Britain's National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) framework was extended in 1990 to include levels equivalent to degree and postgraduate level education, but the development of a postgraduate level NVQ in information and library services (ILS) is proving problematical. The ILS Lead Body, the group responsible for developing standards for the qualifications, has failed to reach consensus on level 5 standards after two years of consultation. Some argue that good ILS postgraduate education in universities is the only way of developing effective management skills.

Defenders of The Ring up in arms at myth in the making

Article Abstract:

Peter Jackson's film version of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings,' due to be released in Dec 2001, is attracting controversy because Jackson is presenting his version of the story, rather than Tolkien's. Many of Tolkien's existing fans would like the story to remain unchanged.
