Once upon a lifetime

Article Abstract:

Historians are generally disapproving of biographies, with political biographies in particular perceived as being primarily concerned with entertaining and instructing rather than imparting a greater understanding of changing political processes. Biographies allow the individual's behaviour to seem historically important, which is contrary to the historian's scientific view of history as absolute truth. However, biographies should be perceived more as character studies that are independent of history as a discipline.

Uprooting red daffodils

Article Abstract:

Meenakshi Mukherjee works at Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, where she is professor of English. She has written a study of the work of Indian writers who use English, and she encourages students to read the works of writers in their own language. Historical and cultural issues related to colonialism are important in the study of English, she argues. Since she began her work, many Indian writers have been published and are included in courses on English literature.

Learning to love biographers

Article Abstract:

Some historians and political theorists do not regard biography as a serious form of study. Biography is both traditional and popular and should be designed to please consumers. Biography is an art and is creative in that it resembles a truth novel. Biographers have to understand a wide range of skills and make links though entering unfamiliar territory. Some biography is difficult to read, but the discipline is changing rapidly and is full of life.
