Cure at a cost

Article Abstract:

Health research is threatened because there is a lack of communication researchers and those whose responsibility it is to deliver medical care to patients. There is a need for them to undertake joint endeavours or National Health Service (NHS) research will go into decline. NHS funding of R&D is complex and is partly driven by the nature of the activity. Main funding streams have been the Service Increment for Teaching and Research (SIFTR), NHS executive funding and ad hoc regional funding.

Hangover cure for the bear with a sore head

Article Abstract:

Russia celebrated in May 1995 the passing of a decade since the launch of a campaign against alcohol abuse. The campaign included a reduction in the production of alcohol products; restrictions to access; increased production of soft drinks; improvement of sport and cultural facilities; and the creation of a temperance society. Initial reports suggested success, but the campaign began to attract criticism in 1987, and alcoholism soon returned to an all-time high.
