Get rid of those professional stabilisers

Article Abstract:

The counselling services provided by universities cast students as delicate creatures who are unable to deal with the normal pressures of life, thereby undermining the mental health of the people they are trying to help. It is argued that the therapy culture that is on the rise in universities in the UK, where students are constantly being told to be on the look out for stress as stress can make them ill and suicidal, is having a counterproductive effect and is only serving to make students feel stressed, ill and suicidal. It is suggested that university life is no harder today then it was in days gone by and the reason for the growing number of students going to therapy is that they are now being told that they need to have therapy, rather than just dealing with their problems themselves.

In pursuit of happy bunnies

Article Abstract:

Much significance is attached to student satisfaction surveys by universities, but it has never been the object of academic life to produce satisfied students. The idea that student satisfaction is remotely connected to quality of academic life is based on business models.

Sever the ties that bind young minds

Article Abstract:

An analysis of students who live at home with their parents rather than moving out to go to college. It is argued that such students remain in a state of adolescence, dependent on their parents and never really reaching their full intellectual potential.
