Gloom and boom; differences between the 1930's slump and the present depression

Article Abstract:

In terms of gross national product and unemployment there are similarities between the present depression and the 1930's economic downturn. Some writers feel that the 1990's economic situation is one of recession rather than a depression, but the UK economy has suffered greatly this time. In the 1930's materials of all types became more freely available, especially weapons. There is now less expenditure on them, service industries have taken over from manufacturing and new technolgy has changed working practices. All this has contributed to the present recession.
