Grease the links or the national asset will rust

Article Abstract:

The author a report on the need to strengthen long-term links between universities and the business sector argues that university-business collaboration must be improved before the UK falls further behind the rest of the world. It is suggested that a series of quite modest initiatives could make a difference, and that the UK has no other option but to try and succeed higher up the food chain as the advantages that the country could once boast, such as the low cost of doing business, no longer hold true.

...believe academic freedom must be defended

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the threats that academic freedom faces is made in the light of the condemnation of the decision by Glasgow University to award a PhD to Richard Yuill, whose doctoral thesis described the "positive" experiences of minors who had been involved in sexual contact with adults. It is contended that universities need to strongly defend the principal of academic freedom if research into difficult and troublesome areas is not to be watered down or abandoned altogether.
