Gridlocked by transfer

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the difficulties that academics face in getting professional institutional support for their work. It is argued that the lack of proper institutional lines of command can stall collaborative projects and that if the current system does not change, then it may become necessary for academics to hire agents to look after their business affairs, which can include a complex muddle of intellectual property agreements, equipment, personnel and grants.

Science fears attacks will rise with Act

Article Abstract:

Experts have warned that freedom of information laws which are due to come into effect in the UK in 2005 could make it impossible for universities to keep the identities of researchers working with animals secret from extremists. There are fears that the release of information about the identities of animal researchers could lead to a rise in attacks from animal extremists.

Time for the simple truth

Article Abstract:

The Royal Society has warned that scientists may be constrained by a new regulatory body if they fail to think harder about how they present research to the public. Following several high-profile science controversies, from genetically modified food to cloning, the Royal Society has spent three years investigating best practice for communiaction of results to the public.
