Guardian agents

Article Abstract:

The intelligence agencies have an important role in monitoring the increasing ownership of weapons, of mass destruction, by terrorist groups and dictators. Some observers have suggested that the secret services are no longer required, following the end of the cold war. The public do not seem to be unduly concerned about the possible threat to their safety from terrorist groups. We need the secret services to continue to provide information about extremist groups and dictatorships who own chemical and nuclear weapons and therefore pose a very real challenge to the West.

Amateur sleuths turn to DNA tests

Article Abstract:

A wide range of new applications for DNA testing are continuously being developed in a move away from its initial use in forensic science, although the ethics of some of the applications are being questioned. Some are concerned that people are being offered the opportunity to discover their susceptibility to hereditary diseases as they are psychologically unprepared to handle the resultant information. DNA testing can also be used to re-write history or preserve endangered species.
