Computers are best when hidden

Article Abstract:

Books on computers are on offer in large numbers. Previously there were books on engines, but we can rely on engines being reliable and no longer need to read as much about them. Computer books proliferate because computers are not well designed to work without our help. Manufacturers should be more responsible for making sure that computers work properly rather than insisting that users become computer literate. Users should resist pressure to become computer literate and persuade manufacturers to make better computers.

Smart to be simple

Article Abstract:

Companies should develop technologically-advanced products that are easy to use so individuals do not feel they have to undertake lifelong learning to acquire the skills to use them. Lifelong learning should not focus solely on the enhancement of coping skills through computer education, with people becoming increasingly perceived as consumers as opposed to citizens. Employment opportunities may be enhanced for people who learn new technology skills, but this discriminates against the untrained.

Collective failure of the imagination

Article Abstract:

There is a need for students to understand the impact of information technology on business. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has carried out a study of how companies respond to change. There is a need for managers to be able to grasp the potential of infrmation technology. The educational system all too often segregates information technology and this tends to perpetuate lack of understanding outside eduation, in business.
