HE research is ideas rich but cash poor

Article Abstract:

Academics at the Society for Research into Higher Education's annual conference in Edinburgh have expressed their frustration that while billions of pounds is being invested in research, they cannot attract enough funding to enable them to examine the major issues affecting the future of higher education in the UK. The delegates warned that unless a funding framework is created, there is a danger that academics' careers and potential significant strides in research would go unfulfilled.

Botany, geology firsts blooming

Article Abstract:

An analysis of degree classification trends has revealed that undergraduiates wanting a first-class honours degree have a higher chance of success if they study geology, botany, aerospace or artificial intelligence. The analysis shows changes since 2002-03 in the percentage of all degree qualifiers in every subject area which have been awarded firsts.

'Dinosaur' economists must lose 'dismal' image

Article Abstract:

Economics departments must review old-fashioned teaching methods and shake off the image of the discipline as boring and stuffy, according to a survey commissioned by The Enterprise Library. Some academics taking part in the survey admitted to being 'a bit of a dinosaur' in their teaching methods.
