Hail Csiro! King of Oz

Article Abstract:

Director of Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Dr Malcolm McIntosh explains that the organisation is unique in the world in doing research in nearly every area of science. CSIRO has 68 research laboratories and field stations, employs some 6,000 people and had a research budget of Aus$716.5 million in 1997/98. CSIRO does a little speculative, blue-sky research but concentrates primarily on applied research with clear intended outcomes. CSIRO also facilitates the use of the results of the research it carries out to assist Australian industry.

Strings for lab funding

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom is reviewing government spending, and chancellor, Gordon Brown, has indicated that funds will be directed toward science and technology. There is concern among scientists that universities may have less control of research funding if a dual system ends whereby both universities and research councils receive funding, and funds are focused on research councils. Research councils have received increased funding in the 10 years to 1998, but universities have not had enough funds to maintain laboratories.
