Harmonising Hellenist

Article Abstract:

Pat Easterling is regius professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge, England. She was an undergraduate at the university and is seen as an independent pluralist. She is particularly interested in Sophocles' plays and is editing one of his works. UK state schools do not often equip students with a knowledge of Greek, and Easterling helps undergraduates with no knowledge of the language. She argues that despite this lack of provision at state schools, modern students benefit from new insights into Greek civilizations through being better able to use their imaginations.

Home alone and learning

Article Abstract:

Distance learning can be fostered through usage of new technology in developing countries. Communications technology can expand educational opportunities, argues Lalita Rajasingham, who has written on this subject and chairs a communications department in Wellington's Victoria University, New Zealand. Commuting is expensive, but new technology means that it is less necessary. Traffic congestion has resulted from the creation of cities.
