Helping at-risk students

Article Abstract:

The Directed Study/Personal Development class at Kearns High School in Utah was created to help students with poor grades and attendance records. The class was the school counselors and administrators' answer to the increasing number of students dropping out of school. The elective class bases grades and citizenship marks on attendance and participation and focuses on responsibility, development of positive study skills and other issues related to school survival. The class has helped previously neglected students regard school as a positive experience.

An air of expectation

Article Abstract:

Learning in schools can be effective only with efficient classroom management, which can be fulfilled by building up expectation rather than through rigid rules. Instruction should be improved and the teacher should be a strong and able leader, respecting individual students and sincerely participating in their learning attempts. The teacher should make continuous assessments of the students and the whole classroom atmosphere should be conducive for learning.

Teaching tips

Article Abstract:

Teachers should be willing to listen to their students to inculcate in them a readiness to talk. Teachers' tendency to ridicule, criticize, moralize, assess, threaten, warn, humor and console students can prevent them from being good listeners. Teachers should be interesting, attentive, patient, encouraging and empathetic to effectively listen to their students.
