Hotline to knowledge exchange

Article Abstract:

The UK government report 'Higher Education in a Learning Society' includes some welcome ideas, but the report lacks coherence and fails to recognise the role of the university as a knowledge exchange. By viewing universities as a learning exchange, attention is focused on universities' task of acquiring, interpreting and disseminating information. The government committee behind the report failed to include younger people, that is the under-35s, and particularly the members of entrepreneurial businesses trading in knowledge itself.

V-cs must grab political advantage

Article Abstract:

There are many new challenges facing university vice chancellors and college principals. These challenges include the strong rise in the number and diversity of students, the government's new approach to higher education policy and the fact that polytechnics have now been allowed to take on university status. The Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals has been expanded to include representatives from the former polytechnics, but it has become harder to obtain agreement on policies.

Pilot confirms change needed

Article Abstract:

The University for Industry pilot in the United Kingdom was launched in 1997. The pilot aimed for 5,000 learner registrations, a target which it has achieved, and to become involved with small and medium companies. The project does not provide courses but instead acts as a broker. A telesales technique was tried and the response was more encouraging than had been predicted. Involvement with small and medium firms has been a difficult task, with lower penetration levels than desired.
