How to fight solitary confinement

Article Abstract:

The increasing move towards more distance learning in higher education is likely to reduce the opportunities for students to learn from their tutors and other students. Students studying distance learning packages may find it hard to get advice if they have a problem with the course. Some students will not ask questions in a tutorial but can learn for listening to others and their tutor. A study looking into how vicarious learners learn from others found by looking at how others needed help in solving problems was the method vicarious learners were able to learn the most.

Excellence in teaching must have prizes

Article Abstract:

The Higher Education Funding Council for England is considering putting aside part of the total grant for teaching to form a fund which would back initiatives designed to provide rewards for high teaching standards. This move is a response to the growing recognition that excellent teaching must be rewarded. Some observers believe that this approach will not do enough to recognize innovative excellence, which requires a dramatic change of academic culture. They feel that it is now time to move away from the structure in which change is imposed from the top down.
