Joining up for the genome

Article Abstract:

The UK must maintain its competitive edge in Europe in the biosciences through coherent planning by government, industry and academics. The government must support innovation and prevent fragmentation to facilitate genomics research which is likely to greatly impact future medical practices. Higher education institutions should develop further collaborations with industry, with institutions identifying well-defined goals that external funders can understand.

Sustainable jobs

Article Abstract:

A high-growth model of economic development has had disastrous effects on employment and the environment. Many environmentalists feel that sustainable, ecologically sensitive industrial policies can also produce sustainable employment. Energy efficiency, pollution reduction and recycling can all produce new jobs. However, governments, employers and workers are often skeptical of environmentalists and their plans for economic reform.
