'I noticed that people soon stopped being nice to me as acting vice-chancellor when I declined requests for meetings, funding and pay rises'

Article Abstract:

A personal account of a brief period spent serving as acting vice-chancellor of Manchester University. The author concludes that while the experience was fascinating and is something she would be prepared to do again for a brief period of time, the issues that she had to deal with left her with a greater sense of sympathy for those that have to do the job on a full time basis.

'A little more "benign dictatorship"-instead of the democratic debate that features so heavily in university committees-might be more productive'

Article Abstract:

A MRC research professor in the faculty of life sciences at Manchester University argues that committees are too often unproductive, waste man-hours and paper and allow staff to escape more productive uses of their time. It is suggested that instead of democratic debate, some times an increase in the level of benign dictatorship might be more beneficial.

'The true details of the research assessment exercise will depend on the views and efforts of panel members--this is the nature of peer review'

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the 2008 research assessment review of university research in the United Kingdom. It is argued that while universities will need to prepare for the exercise, they should not waste too much time trying to guess how the process will work and should instead focus on the long-term future of research in the UK.
