Give students some credit

Article Abstract:

Credit networks can provide advantages for students in United Kingdom universities. They make higher education more accessible by permitting students to learn in small chunks which confirm progress and permit them to go on. Credits can be transferred to a new institution, and universities should seek to develop these transfer systems. A network has been set up by the Derbyshire Regional Network, which started out as a further education consortium, bringing together five colleges.

The lecturers worth their salt

Article Abstract:

Traditional academics may be snobbish about 'practitioner' academics who are working in their field and have little time to carry out research. Such academics may have up-to-date knowledge and sound scholarship, and their research is action research. They can attract funding to universities and may be sought after by companies. University programs that combine academic and practical work are especially valuable. 'Practitioner' academics should not be given second class status.
