No place for a child

Article Abstract:

Admitting younger children into university is likely to change the feel of the institution and make it much more like a school. It may also be difficult to give adequate care to a 14 year old who attends university and to ensure their safety. Other students will not welcome a 14 year old child in their hall of residence. United Kingdom Education Secretary David Blunkett has called for the provision of fast track education for bright children. But the standards of education should be improved within schools to cater for the very bright child rather than sending them to university.

Down the drain

Article Abstract:

The idea that the next world war will be fought over water has gained popularity since it was first voiced by Boutros Boutros Ghali when he was Egyptian foreign minister, but is not supported by experts. Tony Allan of the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, England, points out that the Middle East has not gone to war despite having run out of water in the 1970s. Allan explains that Middle Eastern governments have imported water hidden from sight in food and allowed people to continue using water in the same way as they always have.

The nitty gritty of student choice

Article Abstract:

Natural Sciences Undergraduate Naomi Townshend admitted she did not consider looking at the university league tables before making her choice of university. University of Sheffield Head of the School of English David Burnley feels the university league tables are not very important and other factors have more influence on prospective students. University of Wolverhampton Vice-chancellor John Brooks suggest league tables may be useful for very bright students but the omission of value added factors may be misleading.
