In a class of their own; teachers training teachers

Article Abstract:

It is proposed that graduates who wish to enter teaching should do most of their training in school, supervised and trained by teachers there. Many teachers in school find this concept demanding at a time of rapid change in the educational system. They are already grappling with the national curriculum, pupils with social problems, inadequate resources and buildings. Many feel they would need substantial training themselves to teach adults, and this may not be available.

Social class still counts after students reach 21

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the level of inequality in postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom are examined in the light of the efforts by the Labour Government to do away with inequality at graduate level. It is argued that the Government appears to have little desire to deal with inequality at postgraduate level, where a 2.2 degree and rich parents are more likely to result in postgraduate study than a first for a person from a more modest background.

Students give top marks to the trained: giving lecturers teachers training benefits everyone, according to an international study by Graham Gibbs and Martin Coffey

Article Abstract:

Researchers studied the impact of training on faculty at 22 colleges in nine countries, and determined that instructor training does indeed have a positive and marked influence on instructors. Trained lecturers had improved student evaluations, became more student-focused, and were more likely to begin experimenting with new and innovative teaching methods. In short, the study found that new lecturer training is a worthwhile endeavor.
