Quality certainly begins at home

Article Abstract:

Quality assurance in universities and colleges in the Netherlands had been carried out by the institutions themselves, but an external quality assessment system was launched in 1988. The Assn of Universities in the Netherlands coordinates the scheme. The Assn of Dutch Polytechnics and Colleges has coordinated quality assurance for colleges since 1990. The departments evaluate themselves using guidelines from these bodies. The Departments are also visited by experts.

Stability after high-speed reforms

Article Abstract:

Dutch higher education has undergone a number of changes as the government has sought to shorten the time spent studying courses, and funding has been reduced. University presidents refused to allow further reform in fall 1995, arguing that their short terms financial needs should be assessed first. Lack of consultation was criticised, though universities see the need for some reform. They are also concerned that the pace of change has been too rapid.

Dutch ambition capped

Article Abstract:

Dutch universities are open to all with a school leaving certificate. Students graduate after they accumulate enough credits, which used to take many years. A limit of six years was set and grants have been linked to study speed, with grants becoming loans if not enough progress was made. The aim is for all students to graduate after four years. Available funds have been reduced, and universities have been asked to improve courses.
