It's only at the Bodleian that I am a cripple: Universities must go beyond equality schemes and change a culture that 'disables' people

Article Abstract:

The lack of existing knowledge and varied interpretations of disabilities in universities across the U.K. are presented. The descriptions of a person impaired with paraplegia as able-bodied in the British Library and as a cripple in Oxford University's Bodleian Library are mentioned, stating that universities must eliminate the term and concept of 'disability' in their disability equality schemes in favor of recognizing the range of permanent and temporary impairments in mind and body.

Act now on access

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the impact changes to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) which are to come into force on 01 October 2004 could have on universities and colleges. It is argued that many universities are unaware of the impact that the changes to the DDA will have on them and that unless they work to implement the Act's provisions, people with disabilities will continue to be discriminated against in education.

Access: must do better

Article Abstract:

The government wants to see universities stepping up efforts to attract more students from underrepresented groups following fears that progress on widening participation has stalled. A report on widening participation has warned that a 'slight downturn' in the proportion of people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds entering higher education suggests that progress has stalled.
