Knowledge industry gets down to business: universities will need to grasp the nettle of open learning if they are to survive

Article Abstract:

There was an emphasis on the rapid evolution of learning cultures at the World Open Learning conference held recently in London. The need for cooperation between players so that the new culture better serves the requirements of citizens was discussed, with an emphasis on open learning. There was a call for ways of sustaining the individual outside the traditional structure through close tutorial support and other devices.

U21 goes online just as market tumbles

Article Abstract:

In September 2001, Thomson Learning, and Universitas 21, a consortium of 18 research-intensive universities worldwide, launched an online university with its own course materials. Students are expected to begin registration in January 2003.

Bug finds waste vocation

Three academics from Liverpool John Moores University have founded a company called NvIrophilic which plans to produce a system that enables industrial waste to be broken down by micro-organisms, known as the Luboid system.
