Tories pledge early action to ditch fees

Article Abstract:

The Conservative Party would begin moves to abolish all tuition fees during its first week in office, according to Shadow Education Secretary Tim Collins speaking at the Tory Party conference in week beginning 03 October 2004. The Tories had earlier stated that tuition fees would actually be scrapped in their first week of power but Chris Grayling, the Conservative'' higher education spokesman, acknowledged that this would require legislation to be passed.

Journals 'top ten' sparks a rebellion

Article Abstract:

The Government in the UK has sparked subject leaders in a number of fields, including law, philosophy, history and architecture, to come together to voice their outrage at plans to create "top ten" lists of the most important journals. The move is part of efforts by the Government to establish new performance measures for humanities and arts research but the academics warn that such lists would only serve to kill off emerging publications and disciplines.

Part-timers merit equality

A major priority for the newly-created University and College Union (UCU) will be the fight against the exploitation of hourly paid and part-time lecturers. according to members. At the final conference of the Association of University Teachers (AUT) before it merged with Natfhe to become UCU, Natfhe activists agreed to the campaign against casualisation in universities at the heart of the new UCU.
