Lecturers strike to keep union

Article Abstract:

Seminars and classes at New York University (NYU) have had to be cancelled as a result of a strike by graduate students, who undertake extensive teaching duties. The students are striking as a result of what they perceive to be a union-busting initiative implemented by NYU president John Sexton, who has attempted to derecognise their union.

Thrifty US dreams up 4-day week

Article Abstract:

Lynchburg College in Virginia and Juniata College in Pennsylvania have introduced a 4-day week to enable staff to reduce commuting costs. With the price of petrol 25 percent higher now than summer 2005, staff are facing financial burdens which are reduced by cutting the week to four days.

Harvard lifts teaching rewards and status

Article Abstract:

Harvard University has set up a task force to find ways to reward staff for high-quality teaching. The move comes after a government report which questions the future and competitiveness of state and privat higher education in the US.
