Linguist with a passion for bon mot is tipped for top

Article Abstract:

Oxford University Press has singled out Richard Scholar, a French lecturer at Oriel College, Oxford, as the one-to-watch in the new academic writer field in 2006. Scholar's first book, "The Je-Ne-Sais-Quoi in Early Modern Europe: Encounters with a Certain Something", was published in October 2005 and is beginning to be noticed by the media while his second book, "Divided Cities", is due to be released in January 2006.

Human disaster elicits superhuman response that offers more than cash

Article Abstract:

Durham University launched a Sri Lankan project in response to the 2004 tsunami which could become the template for future humanitarian aid. The Higher Education Funding Council for England will fund a 3-year pilot study allowing three Durham academics to teach at the University of Ruhuna and the British Council will pay for Ruhuna academics to visit Durham.
