Article Abstract:

News that the planned merger of Bradford College and Bradford University has collapsed has been greeted with little surprise within the sector, with university managers who have already experienced the merger process noting that the merging of two institutions can be fiendishly difficult, even in the best of circumstances. The Higher Education Funding Council for England had warned in a letter just before the merger talks collapsed that the extent of work and the timescales involved for such mergers are often underestimated, making the process more complicated and jeopardising the desired outcome.

Bradford merger collapses

Article Abstract:

Plans to create the first "comprehensive" university in the United Kingdom through the merger of Bradford University and Bradford College have collapsed following 20 months of talks. The two institutions have issued a joint announcement in which they state that crucial decisions could not be made in time to make the planned merger practicable for the target date of August 2004. Sources inside and outside the institutions state that the plans faltered as fears grew that the merger was becoming a takeover of the college by the university.
