Means of production

Article Abstract:

Researcher Rick Delbridge found many female workers, at the Japanese run factories, were unhappy with their situation. The constant quality checks resulted in a decline in workers' abilities and morale. Some workers set high targets in the quality of their work and therefore resented any action by management which stopped them achieving their aims. The introduction of counselling sessions where a failure because only managers gave their views. Managers did not understand the workers and were unable to fulfill their own targets. Delbridge spent a total of four months at two factories.

Forbidden melodies

Article Abstract:

Ethnomusicologist John Baily's office in Brighton, England, is a shrine to the music of Herat, Afghanistan, to which he made a two-year field trip in the 1970s. Baily, who teaches the masters degree in ethnomusicology at Goldsmiths College, London, England, followed Afghanistan's professional musicians and recorded over 100 hours of music. The Islamic Taliban faction that now controls Afghanistan has banned music, but Baily hopes that he will be able to return to Herat one day and give back the city the best of the music it has lost.
