Military intervention: is it justified?

Article Abstract:

It is argued that the US should be ready to render military aid in instances which call for the prevention of massive loss of life in local or international territories. However, a distinct national consensus points out that the US military should not be considered the world's ultimate police force.

Somalia: lessons from a humanitarian intervention

Article Abstract:

The US made numerous mistakes in attempting to stem the civil war in Somalia. Failure to recognize that effective intervention would not be a speedy affair was an error, as was the failure to disarm warlords. The United Nations and other factors are discussed.

America's frequent deployment of troops across the globe since the Cold War ended has made Americans more supportive of the use of force than in the 1980s. The risks of a continuation of the Clinton interventionist doctrine are analyzed.
