Moving up fast on the inside lane

Article Abstract:

Juggernaut is an interior design company which was set up by three graduates from United Kingdom design courses in 1992. They began with an unofficial studio and have moved to a warehouse which includes a workshop and studio. The company has attracted a large number of contracts and achieved a turnover of 150,000 pounds sterling in 1997. Two of the founders also work part-time teaching at a university. Steven Jensen, one of the founders, argues that students seeking to set up a design company should do so because they love designs and they will be more successful than if they simply seek to make money.

Let's get physical

Article Abstract:

New types of physics degree courses are being launched to combat the downturn in applications. The courses will train students either to go into research or more practical applications of the subject. In 1983 2.6% of graduate intake signed up for physics, in 1993 the number had fallen to 1.8%. In Japan and Germany numbers taking science courses increased dramatically between 1983-89.

Equipment goes down the tubes. (research laboratories)

Article Abstract:

Many research laboratories have equipment which is only of adequate quality, with some equipment in poor or very poor condition, according to a survey of major items of equipment. It is often difficult for university research departments to replace equipment such as centrifuges, as such items are not as 'eye catching' to university funds.
