Tapping into the coffers

Article Abstract:

UK universities had four billion pounds sterling to spend on research in 1989-90. They are funded by government grant, research bodies funds and some have endowments. The UK government and industry pay universities to carry out research, over 100 million pounds sterling each. The EC is also funding research to the tune of 39 million pounds sterling in 1989-90. Sources of money outside the traditional government ones are likely to become increasingly necessary.

Misquoted in the hallowed halls of fame; an influential American index shows declining influence for UK clinical research

Article Abstract:

The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), a US company, have been counting the number of times British medical research in clinical medicine is quoted by other researchers. They conclude that the amount of citation of British work is falling, in 1981 a paper was cited 1.3 times over the average, in 1992 it is 1.2. The figures are better in the surgery and physiology fields. Many clinical researchers feel these figures are open to further investigation.
