My summer hols wr CWOT. B4, we usd 2 go 2NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3:-@ kds FTF

Article Abstract:

An examination of the furore that was sparked when a teenager submitted the statement "My summer hols wr CWOT. B4, we usd 2 go 2NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3:-@ kds FTF" as part of an essay about how she spent her summer holidays. Many argue that the language, derived from the short hand used in SMS text messages, used in the statement - which translates as "My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother and his girlfriend and their three screaming kids face to face" - could cause actual harm to literacy and learning, but other argue that the development of the SMS text language demonstrates the unique ability of humans to adapt language to suit the variables of a given situation.
