Article Abstract:

American feminist philosopher of science Sandra Harding, whose 'The Science Question in Feminism' published in 1986 has been described as a turning point for the feminist analysis of science, aims to create another powerful synthesis with her new book scheduled for publication in 1997. The book argues that modern science is best viewed as a 'local knowledge system.' Harding, who is moving to a professorship at the University of California at Los Angeles after many years as professor of philosophy at the University of Delaware, is attempting to make her ideas appropriate for the postcolonial world.

Star of the big screen

Article Abstract:

Therese Marteau, Professor of Health Psychology at the Guy's Hospital medical school, London, has a team of researchers who are looking at the outcome of informing people about genes through genetic screening. After much persistance Marteau obtained a grant from the Medical Council for her work in 1986. She began by studying the opinion of women on testing for neural tube abnormalities, which showed up some of the psychological problems associated with such testing, and how little women know about tests.

Big guns blaze in a rodeo of bestsellers

Article Abstract:

The British public prefers to read science books featuring subjects such as cosmology, quantum physics or genetics rather than other disciplines such as geology and physiology. People want to discover more about the origin of life because many of them do not have a religious belief. Philosophy is a significant attraction to publishers who want to sell books. Books also sell well if an individual scientist is depicted as a hero and genius.
