New body may feel old pains

Article Abstract:

Plans for a new UK Health Professions Council have been set out in a consultation document. Some observers have suggested the new council will have more powers and improve the standard of courses for health professionals. Others feel the professions will no longer been treated individually which will not improve the quality of the service they offer to patients. The council looks after 12 health professions, such as paramedics, art therapists and dietitians. The new council is due to take over from the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine, which was set up in 1960.

Another brick out of the wall

Article Abstract:

Continuing education or extra-mural departments have been a university tradition rather than polytechnic. They were seen as separate departments, but are now being integrated into the mainstream at City and Warwick universities. They continue to attract mature students, and courses taken at City and Warwick can count towards a degree. Funding has been allocated at 40 million pounds sterling until 1995, and a working party is looking at the whole concept.
