New donors back commonwealth of learning

Article Abstract:

The president of the Commonwealth of Learning (CoL) is seeking financial support from non-governmental organisations to supplement its declining funding from Commonwealth governments. CoL was founded at the Vancouver Commonwealth Summit of 1987 to supply distance education for people previously marginalised in educational terms for reasons such as poverty or geographical isolation. Since it became operational in 1989, CoL has implemented projects in over 40 countries, but it has had its C$9 million budget halved in the last four years.
