No university can shirk from confronting Aids

Article Abstract:

Universities throughout the world should consider focusing some resources to help contain the Aids epidemic. The Universities of London and Nottingham have joined with the University of Natal, South Africa, to research Aids and HIV, with the research team hoping to develop intervention policies by observing how some communities deal with the disease better than others. The incidence of HIV/Aids is growing rapidly in Sub-Saharan Africa, with 27% of people in KwaZulu-Natal believed to be HIV-positive. Those aged 16-25 are most vulnerable, with death rates particularly high among this group.

A place in the global village

Article Abstract:

Globalisation has an effect on all human beings as it combines economic, social and political factors. Some observers have suggested globalisation is another way for the developed nations to dominate the Third World. Yet many universities are trying to extend their global links. The South African University of Natal is studying the meaning of globalisation whilst increasing communication with foreign institutions. South Africa also recognizes the importance of welcoming foreign lecturers and students to their universities in order to extend their international experience.
