Parents alarmed at suicide risk

Article Abstract:

It has been suggested the suicide rate for UK students has increased fourfold between 1983/84-1993/94. Other studies have found the majority of potential suicides are unlikely to visit their general practitioners before they commit suicide. The rate for male suicide is increasing and 75% of telephone calls to a support organisation were concerned with the welfare of male students. It may be preferable for impressionable students, who are also high academic achievers, to study at establishments near their homes for extra support.

Loopholes in the tangled web; Student Charter has doubtful chance of improving academic practice

Article Abstract:

Discussion is taking place as to the feasibility of student charters. The Department for Education wants to see one in operation by the end of 1992, and is looking for input from institutions. It would probably include course information and admission, student finance, student services, membership of student unions and institution's links with employers. Special needs provision and equal opportunities would also be mentioned.
