Plan for the worst, hope for the best

Article Abstract:

There are likely to be significant developments in further and higher education in the UK in 1998. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority will make some important decisions on qualification frameworks at subdegree level in early 1998, while colleges will gain more opportunities as a result of the release of young workers for training under the Teaching and Higher Education Bill. The Quality Assurance Agency should serve to boost progress in higher education, and universities will give attention to developing income-generating consultancy and applied research work.

New RCA rector seeks lucrative commissions

Article Abstract:

The recently appointed rector of the Royal College of Art (RCA), England, Christopher Frayling, is seeking to increase income from commissions, and boost the RCA's profile as an international institution. The RCA needs new funding sources, according to Frayling, especially since there are disagreements with the Higher Education Funding Council on issues such as one-to-one teaching. Frayling also aims to co-operate with dance, drama and music institutions and set up a lobby group.
