Profits without honour

Article Abstract:

Many US universities are making large amounts of money yet are still demanding extra funding from the taxpayers. The media is full of reports of the sums paid to some professors whilst ignoring the much smaller salaries paid to the majority of the teaching staff. The public and the government are increasingly losing its respect for the universities. Many universities have responded to the need to contribute to their running costs but their apparent success had made them unpopular. Some scientists are taking advantage of university resources to carry out their own research.

Thoroughly modern Millie

Article Abstract:

Institute professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Mildred Dresselhaus reveals that part of her early interest in the physics of carbon solids stems from having four young children to bring up. She explains that she was not concerned about missing a day because the area was a research backwater, and that many good ideas came to her while she was nursing babies and changing nappies. Dresselhaus, whose particular interest are the cage-like carbon molecules known as fullerenes, is proud of having helped increase the number of women scientists at MIT.

Doomsday revisited

Article Abstract:

There is concern about reports of materials used to make nuclear weapons appearing on the black market, but stories about this issue have ceased to appear in the media. Despite this silence, smuggling of such material appears to be increasing. Dismantling nuclear weapons leave a surplus of plutonium. There will also be problems when chemical weapons are dismantled. This will cost a great deal of money and prediction of disaster could still become real.
