Programming a future through voc ed

Article Abstract:

Pennsylvania Dept of General Services Sec David L. Jannetta was among the first graduates of a double major program of Altoona Area High School. The program offered students pursuing college degrees a double major in an academic subject and computer programming, through the vocational education department. Jannetta's training in computer programming influenced his work as the mayor of Altoona in the 1980s, when he provided city employees with computers to improve efficiency. He also worked closely with Gov Robert P. Casey in 1988, when he assumed his current position. Jannetta credits his success to his vocational training in high school.

Chef Kelly's dream of business ownership

Article Abstract:

Twenty-one year old John Fitzgerald Kelly is a chef at the Hyatt Hotels in the Virgin Islands with an annual income of about $32,000 and the goal of owning his own restaurant within four years. Kelly credits his success to high school vocational training in Colleton Area Vocational Center in Walterboro, SC, which he took upon the advice of a cousin. His training equipped him with the knowledge and skills that made him an outstanding student of the culinary arts program at Johnson & Wales University in Norfolk, VA.

"Academic snobs" have a lot to learn

Article Abstract:

A teacher narrates her work experiences in academic and vocational fields. She feels that academic teachers often have snobbish attitudes about vocational teachers. She believes the discrimination between vocational and academic schools can be ended by eliminating labels. The role of a guide is important for both academic and vocational teachers.
