Ratings, not cash, is prime incentive

Article Abstract:

Nine out of ten academics are more eager to publish their work to boost research ratings than apply for patents for their research, according to a survey by law firm Morgan Cole. Even where universities do exploit intellectual capital, the cash value amounted to not more than 0.2 percent of total institutional funding, on average.

Academics venture to bring in the money

Imperial College London academics are the most business-minded in the UK, making more than GBP 47 million from contract research in 2003-04, according to a survey by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce). Birmingham University made GBP 45.1 million in the period, while Leeds University made GBP 40.1 million.

Carers put duty before careers

Article Abstract:

A quarter of higher education staff who care for elderly relatives shun promotion, accordng to a survey by Staffordshire University. Two thirds of the 238 Staffordshire staff responding to the survey had caring responsibilities and of those caring for elderly relatives, 25 percent did not apply for or refused promotion.
