Red faces, white coats, blue funk

Article Abstract:

The BSE crisis in the UK is an example of the uncertainty surrounding many areas of science and the complex relations between the government and scientists. Critics claims that the government has ignored warnings from independent scientists over the threat to humans from beef infected with BSE or 'mad cow disease'. Scientists often complain over difficulties in obtaining information from the government. However, the government's task is not easy either: it must take sometimes uncertain scientific data and translate statistical probabilities into government policy.
