The boys from Via Panisperna

Article Abstract:

The diary of leading Italian physicist Edoardo Amaldi reveals historical details of the decline of Italy's nuclear research activities during 1938-1940. Italian physicists were the leading nuclear researchers worldwide in the mid-1930s, but many fled to the United States because of Italy's Fascist laws and oppression of the Jews prior to 1940. The physicists who remained in Italy were disheartened by the political regime, and the decline of the country's physics research activities continued following the end of the Second World War. Amaldi's diary can be accessed via the Internet.

Italy confronts funding furore

Plans include reformation of research institutes, new committees, incentives to encourage investment from the private sector, and new directives and legislation. The plans are expected to be held back by lack of funding. While Europe boasts an average spend on research of 2% of GNP, Italy spends only 1.1%.
